Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) in Red Deer | Vodder-Trained Registered Massage Therapy

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialized hands-on therapy designed to support the natural movement of lymphatic fluid throughout the body. At Stride Physiotherapy & Wellness in Red Deer, MLD is provided by a Registered Massage Therapist trained in Levels 1 and 2 of the Dr. Vodder Method of Manual Lymph Drainage.

Using precise, light, rhythmic movements, Manual Lymphatic Drainage stimulates the superficial lymphatic vessels located just beneath the skin, helping support the movement of excess fluid from the tissues through the lymphatic system.

Unlike traditional massage therapy, MLD does not rely on deep pressure or vigorous manipulation of muscles. Treatment is typically slow, gentle, and highly specific to the lymphatic system and the individual needs of each patient.

HOW MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE WORKS

Manual Lymphatic Drainage uses gentle, rhythmic, light-touch techniques to stimulate the superficial lymphatic vessels located just beneath the skin.

The lymphatic system plays an important role in maintaining fluid balance and transporting lymph throughout the body. Using specific sequences and skin-stretching techniques, Vodder Method MLD is designed to encourage lymphatic flow and support the movement of excess fluid away from areas of congestion or swelling.

Because MLD uses slow, repetitive movements and very light pressure, many patients also find treatment deeply relaxing.

How Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage Different From Regular Massage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is very different from traditional relaxation or deep-tissue massage. Because many lymphatic vessels are located close to the surface of the skin, MLD uses very light, precise pressure rather than deep pressure into the muscles.

During a Vodder Method treatment, your therapist uses slow, rhythmic movements and specific treatment sequences designed to support lymphatic flow. MLD should generally feel gentle and relaxing rather than deep or painful.

Can Manual Lymphatic Drainage Help with Pain Relief?

As Manual Lymphatic Drainage helps reduce localized swelling, a side effect of moving this excess fluid out of a painful area can be pain relief!

Addressing the nervous system: The gentle, rhythmic touch used during Manual Lymphatic Drainage stimulates sensory receptors in the skin. These signals travel through the nervous system and may influence how pain signals are processed, helping to reduce pain and promote a calming, relaxing effect.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Before your first Manual Lymphatic Drainage appointment, you will complete a lymphatic health intake form. This allows your therapist to review your medical history, treatment goals, and any potential precautions or contraindications before treatment.

At the beginning of your appointment, your Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) will discuss your symptoms and goals, assess the area being treated, and explain the recommended treatment approach.

MLD treatment uses gentle, rhythmic movements and light pressure. Your treatment will be individualized based on the area of concern, your health history, and your goals.

Your therapist will also discuss what to expect following treatment and whether additional appointments or other healthcare services may be appropriate.

Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage Safe for Everyone?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is gentle, but it may not be appropriate for everyone. Certain medical conditions require additional precautions, medical clearance, modification of treatment, or may mean MLD should not be performed.

Before your first appointment, your therapist will review your health history and screen for potential contraindications. If you have a new or unexplained area of swelling, an active infection, significant heart or kidney concerns, a history or concern of blood clots, or another complex medical condition, please let your therapist know before treatment.

If you are unsure whether MLD is appropriate for you, contact our clinic before booking so we can help determine the appropriate next step.

A Note About Lymphedema

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is one component that may be used in the management of lymphedema; however, lymphedema requires specialized assessment and care.

Our Level 1 and 2 Vodder-trained therapist does not provide comprehensive lymphedema management. Patients with diagnosed or suspected lymphedema may require treatment from a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) or appropriately trained healthcare provider.

We look forward to providing you with this in the near future.
