Electrotherapy

Interferential Current (IFC), Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES), and Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)

Electrotherapy is a treatment used to reduce pain, relax and stimulate muscles, decrease swelling, and promote healing. Electrotherapy involves electrodes being placed onto the skin to deliver impulses around the affected area or injured tissue. Electrotherapy can help to promote circulation and release endorphins (your body’s natural painkillers) around the affected area. Patients usually experience a “pins and needles” sensation with this treatment that may be followed by muscle contractions, depending on the intensity of the stimulation.
